Kalaw – Burma

The bus arrived in Kalaw at 3am it was freezing and dark. Lucky I hadn’t to walk around in the cold, dark and with my backpack to find accommodation, I met a very sweet young lady who worked on a guest house just in front of the bust station and they did have hot water. I was so happy to be indoors, I took a hot shower and went back to bed, there was an big blanket but the room felt so cold.

Kalaw is a hill town in the Shan State of Burma. Everyone who comes to Kalaw goes trekking in the hills. The town is surrounded by Buddhist pagodas, hilltop viewpoints and the peaceful villages of Palaung, Danu, Pa-O, Taung Yo and Danaw tribes. Most villagers depend primarily on farming, but some subsidise their income by making handcrafts and providing accommodation and meals for visiting trekkers.

I went to Sam’s family trekking to arrange a trekking to Inle Lake (50Km), they were very helpful and organized. I joined and group of other 4 travellers and we agreed to do the trekking for 3 day and 2 nights. We walked for about 6 hours a day through pine tree forest, villages and wheat, rice, potato, tea, sesame, potato and chilli plantations. We spent the night at a family house where they provided lots of blankets and amazing home cooked food. As the last night on of the trekking were Christmas night the family who hosted us made and very special meal lighten with candles as there wasn’t electricity in the village. The night was very cold but we went for a short walk after dinner and the sky were so impressing full of stars and no lights around made it one of those moments that one wonders of the beauty of simple pleasures in life.
The end of the trekking is in Inle Lake where we took and boat for about 45 min to our guest house.

  1. Wow so jealous! Amazing photos, makes me want to take the next flight out to Burma. ‘Catching the train’ and ‘Train Passengers’ need to somehow be published or exhibited!
