Inle Lake - Burma - Fisherman
Inle Lake – Burma – Fisherman

After 3 days walking we were exhausted but our moods were lifted when we arrive in the lake. We were rewarded with an amazing view of Inle Lake, it is 13.5 mile long and 7 miles wide but up close it’s hard to tell where the lake finishes and the marshes start. The boat ride gave us a chance to rest whilst we amazed ourselves with the view of this wonderful watery world of floating gardens, stilted villages and crumbling stupas. The lake is busy with boats as it is the main means of transportation but it doesn’t spoiled the somewhat heavenly view of the mountains that tumble down towards the lakeshore, blurring the distinction between heaven and earth.

I stayed at the village of Nyaungshwe, at the north end of the lake. Here one can find all the services for travellers like budget accommodation, internet cafes, laundry services, travel agencies and western food.
I stayed at Joy hotel and the staff was, as usual in Burma, very friendly and always tried to accommodate the guests needs. They arranged bicycle rent, boat trips, map of the village and were always happy to answer your questions.

You can easily explore the village by cycling or walking through the lush countryside, visit an winery, an hot spring and waterfall, but the best way to experience the lake is to take an boat trip to the neighbours villages. Popular stops include floating gardens, monasteries and stupas in Inthein. You will see markets selling gorgeous handcraft and workshops where you can learn the traditional technique of weaving, jewellery-making and wood-carving.

Inle Lake is one of those place where an traveller can relax and if feeling an bit home sick it is easy to find good western food like pizza but still have lots of contact with the local culture. Despite all the very good pizzas, pastas, chocolate pancakes my favourite restaurant in Inle Lake is Live Dim Sum House, shame I just found that on my last day. This was by far the best Dim Sum restaurant I have been in Southeast Asia.

It is nearly New Year and inevitable I start thinking of time. I can’t decide how I am feeling about time, is it going too fast? (I feel I still have loads to see and I am running out of time) or it seems that I am here for longer than I am actually am (It’s like meeting and friend from kindergarten after 30 year, so much to learn about this person but there is an connection between you, maybe because I feel very welcome and not really an intruder). Anyway, difficult to explain, come to Burma and you will experience by yourself.
New Year Eve is an big day for me, not that I am expecting an big party but it is an special date symbolising closure, conclusions, transition, renewing, creation, transformation, hope and love. My biggest expectation for Burma were Bagan, home of more than 4.000 Buddhists temples and wouldn’t be better place to celebrate the New Year.

I couldn’t book an accommodation and apparently the city will be very busy and it is the most expensive and touristic place in Burma. But my heart is already set in this direction and I won’t argue with it.

Inle Lake – Perdendo a noção do tempo
