Htilominlo Temple – Bagan – Burma

Bagan lies within the plains where more than 4.000 Buddhist temples stand, site of the first Burmese Kingdom dating back between 11th and 13th centuries. Despite if centuries of neglect, looting, erosion, regular earthquakes (including a massive one in 1975), this temple-studded plain remains a quite simply breathtaking vision.

The bus arrived in Bagan at 3am, not a very convenient time to search for accommodation, I sat in the bar at the bus station to kill sometime and avoid the high prices of taxi offers the moment you leave the bus. After an hour or so of bargaining one horse cart driver agreed to take me to an guest house where they gave me a blanket and bench to sleep until the morning. The guest house was fully booked but they let me leave my luggage and lend me a bike so I could search for accommodation nearby. It took me few hours to find a room available but luckily when I arrive at Pann Cherry Guest House someone was checking out and I could have this room. It was a basic room, clean and cold shower but the cheapest I had paid in Burma, so I was very happy.

One can visit the temples on a horse cart, minivan tours or on your own by bicycle. With a map on my hand (not that would make any difference for a woman) a e-bike (electronic bicycle) full powered I set off to discover the temples of Bagan. The more popular and working temples like Anada Patho and Htilominlo Patho are impressive and give a sense of what the place was like at its zenith, while others conceal colourful mural and hidden stairways that lead to exterior platforms and jaw-dropping views across the plains. The real fun in Bagan is to pedal off on a bike and have your adventure amid the not-so-ruined temples, climbing up and find a unique sunset view point.

My initial plan were to stay 5 nights in Bagan and take it all slowly but ended up staying 10 days and I left with my heart feeling small and nearly crying. Bagan has a magical vibe, scenery is unbelievable, and people are very kind and considerate. I had big expectations for Bagan and I know it sometimes it can lead to frustration but it wasn’t the case, I loved every minute I spent in Bagan.
